A type of viking longship mentioned in the anglo-saxon chronicle. little is known about it, but the text indicates it had fewer than sixty oars (see saxon seapower). the vessel may have been named after the river esk in northern england, on which the norsemen had a settlement called hvitely (white town) now transliterated to whitby.
