Lassie

Морской словарь
Few people would associate the famous canine movie star with the sea, but there is a direct connection. on new year’s day 1915, a british fleet was steaming off the devon coast, when hms formidable, the fourth of five royal navy ships to bear that name, developed engine trouble and fell behind the line. at 2:30 in the morning the crippled battleship was struck by two torpedoes fired from german submarine u-24. she sank in less than two hours, to become the first british battleship to be lost in world war i. only 199 men were saved, out of a complement of 750, and the wreck is an official war grave. seventy-one survivors crammed into a pinnace which required constant bailing in ten-meter (30- foot) waves and high winds. all day long and through the following night the little boat was battered by rain and hail, but it was spotted next morning by a miss gwen harding walking along the marine parade at lyme regis. by this time, fourteen had died and been buried at sea, but a rapidly-mounted rescue operation found fifty-one still alive (three of whom died after being rescued) along with six dead bodies. the corpses were brought ashore and laid out on the floor of the pilot boat inn, where the landlady’s collie dog lassie persistently licked the face of seaman james cowan until he miraculously coughed and returned to life. decades later, the incident (very loosely interpreted) inspired the series of movies and a television program.
