Longer than twenty winding rivers joined end-to-end, this primordial water serpent is said to have been formed on the fifth day of creation. living in the mediterranean sea, he is a brilliant and beautiful sight, with dazzling bright eyes and luminous shiny scales. as with other creations, he was originally given a female companion, but she was taken away when the creator realized that, if something of that size was allowed to multiply, its progeny would soon overfill all the oceans of the world.

The battle of leyte gulf (23–26 october 1944) included four major naval engagements— in the sibuyan sea and surigao strait; and off samar island and cape engano—which, together with other related actions, are generally considered to form the largest naval battle of world war ii and, possibly, the largest naval battle in history. the imperial japanese navy mobilized nearly all of its remaining major surface vessels in an attempt to defeat the allied invasion of leyte but was repulsed by the u.s. navy’s 3rd and 7th fleets, suffering extremely heavy losses including the “super-battleship” musashi, two other battleships, four aircraft carriers, and eight cruisers.
