Mary celeste

Морской словарь
On 7th november 1872, a canadian- built half-brig (brigantine), sailed from new york with a cargo of 1701 barrels of alcohol bound for genoa in italy. her master benjamin briggs was an experienced mariner and a known teetotaler; his mate albert richardson was fully qualified and licensed for command. also on board were a crew of six, plus briggs’ wife sarah, and his 2-year-old daughter sophia. on 4th december british brigantine dei gratia overhauled mary celeste about halfway between the azores and portugal. captain morehouse was about to hail his friend captain briggs when he realized the other ship was unmanned and out of control. a painter was seen dangling over the stern. he boarded the vessel, finding it relatively undamaged and well-stocked with food and water. the cargo was intact except for nine barrels of alcohol which had been stove in and the contents drained into the bilges. the longboat was missing, along with most of the ship’s navigation instruments, and there was no sign of anyone on board. a court of inquiry reached no definitive conclusion, but suggested that briggs—possibly fearing alcohol leaking from the broken barrels might explode— might have abandoned ship, intending to trail astern in the longboat until it was safe to board again, but the painter snapped in a storm, casting them adrift to perish.

Brigantine, английский
  1. A two-masted vessel with foremast square rigged, and mainmast fore and aft rigged.

  2. A square-rigged vessel with two masts. a term variously applied by the mariners of different european nations to a peculiar sort of vessel of their own marine. amongst british seamen this vessel is distinguished by having her main-sail set nearly in the plane of her keel, whereas the main-sails of larger ships are spread athwart the ship`s length, and made fast to a yard which hangs parallel to the deck; but in a brig, the foremost side of the main-sail is fastened at different heights to hoops which encircle the main-mast, and slide up and down it as the sail is hoisted or lowered: it is extended by a gaff above and a boom below. brigantine is a derivative from brig, first applied to passage-boats; in the celtic meaning “passage over the water.” (see hermaphrodite or brig-schooner.)

  3. A small two-masted ship, squarerigged on the foremast and main topmast, and foreand- aft on the lower mainmast.
