[1] an assistant (i.e., boatswain’s mate, carpenter’s mate, etc.). [2] one of a merchantman’s officers including: • the first (or chief ) mate (or officer) who is second- in-command to the master, responsible for all deck operations including supplies, maintenance, cargo handling, and stowage with particular attention to the vessel’s stability. at sea, he or she stands the morning and evening (4–8) bridge watches. • the second mate/officer is the ship’s navigator, with prime responsibility for the upkeep of charts, monitoring navigation equipment, and (frequently) fire-fighting equipment. keeps the mid and afternoon (12–4) watches at sea. • the third mate/officer assists the chief and second mates as required, supervises the vessel’s loading, and is responsible for emergency survival equipment (lifeboats and rafts, personal floatation gear, etc.). at sea, he or she stands the first and forenoon (8–12) watches. • large ships have additional (numbered) junior mates or officers.
