A large movement generated in head-on or stern-on sea conditions. its period is about half the natural roll period and occurs in phase with large pitch angle. this relatively new phenomenon is caused by the wide beams and flared bows of post– panamax container ships. when the bow is down due to moderate pitching and there is a slight roll, the large flare can be abruptly immersed in a wave crest. the restoring buoyancy force, coupled with the wave excitation force, pushes the ship to one side. similar action happens on the other side when the bow pitches down in the next cycle. the effect is unpredictable when multiple waves pakistan 232 and swells are coming from different directions, and even moderately high waves can reach the critical threshold for any specific hull design, especially in head/stern or near head/stern conditions. maximum roll always occurs when the bow is pitched down, and unusually large roll angles can be quickly generated, oscillating rapidly with about half the ship’s natural roll period. the roll can increase unexpectedly, from minimal to over 30 degrees in just a few cycles. leaving little time for corrective action (changing the heading to beam seas is the quickest). violent parametric rolls have caused hundreds of containers to break their constraints and be damaged or slide overboard.
