Rudder quadrant

Морской словарь

Quadrant, английский
  1. Квадрант

  2. Cuadrante

  3. One of four sectors of the body thought of as being divided by the sagittal plane and the intertubercular plane tenderness in the right lower quadrant

  4. A reflecting instrument used to take the altitude above the horizon of the sun, moon, or stars at sea, and thereby to determine the latitude and longitude of the place, &c. &c. it was invented by hadley. also, in speaking of double stars, or of two objects near each other, the position of one component in reference to the other is indicated by the terms, north following, north preceding, south following, or south preceding, the word quadrant being understood.—a gunner`s quadrant, for determining the gun`s angle of elevation. the long arm is inserted into the bore, while the short one remains outside, with a graduated arc and plummet, showing the inclination. for depression, on the contrary, the long arm must be applied to the face of the piece. also, a graduated arc on the carriage showing, by an index on the trunnion, the gun`s elevation above the plane of its platform; first applied by the gallant captain broke.—the mural quadrant, was framed and fitted with telescope, divisions, and plumb-line, firmly attached to the side of a wall built in the plane of the meridian; only used in large observatories.—senical quadrant, consists of several concentric quadratic arcs, divided into eight equal parts by radii, with parallel right lines crossing each other at right angles. it was made of brass, or wood, with lines drawn from each side intersecting one another, and an index divided by sines also, with 90° on the limb, and two sights on the edge, to take the altitude of the sun. sometimes, instead of sines, they were divided into equal parts. it was in great use among the french navigators, from its solving the problems of plane sailing.

  5. A former navigational instrument, con- punt 252 sisting of a flat piece of metal cut like a quarter-circle, with a 90° angle at the top and a curved side marked with a scale of degrees at the bottom. a weighted thread hung from the top. the navigator lined up one straight edge with the sun or a star and noted where the thread crossed the scale. since a celestial body is directly overhead (90°) at the pole and lies on the horizon (0°) at the equator, the angle indicated the ship’s latitude.

  6. Квадрант; четверть круга

  7. One-fourth part of the perimeter of the face of a bit crown; the quarter of a circle; an arc of 90°. quadruple a. see aaaa.

Quadrant analysis, английский

Quadrantal spheres, английский

  7. Руль, перо руля

  8. The appendage attached by pintles and braces to the stern-post of a vessel, by which its course through the water is governed. it is formed of several pieces of timber, of which the main one is generally of oak, extending the whole length. tiphys is said to have been its inventor. the anglo-saxon name was steor-roper.

  9. A vertical underwater plate or blade with a long shank, forming part of the steering mechanism of a boat or ship. it is usually fastened outside the hull at or near the stern, hinged at its forward edge to the rudder post. the device operates on the principle of unequal pressures, forcing the stern to turn or yaw in one direction by diverting the flow of water in the opposite direction. research in the early 1980s showed it feasible to use rudder(s) for roll damping, while simultaneously controlling the ship’s heading. the voith-schneider drive eliminates the need for a rudder by combining propulsion and steering systems. (from the anglo-saxon roth or = turning oar.)

  10. On an aeroplane, the rudder is a control surface usually on the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer or fin. the rudder is used to control yaw.

  11. Avertical plate for steering a boat.
