Two such systems are in worldwide use. they consist of aids to navigation in which the shape, number and coloring of buoys and their relative positions indicate the location of navigable waterways. [1] the cardinal system is best suited to coasts with many hazards to navigation. it is always used in conjunction with [2] the lateral system which works well in regions where channels are well-defined with few hazards.

As a global superpower, the united states divides the entire world into military combatant commands, with an admiral or general as commander-in-chief (cinc) of all the armed forces in each designated region or function. the structure is flexible, and changes as required to meet national security needs. as of 2008, there are six established geographic commands: • central (egypt, arabia, central asia). • europe (including greenland and the former soviet union, central asian republics excluded). • northern (america). • southern (america). • pacific. • africa. there are also four functional commands not bounded by geography—joint forces, special operations, strategic, and transportation. the establishment of a unified medical command is under consideration.
