Archaic term for hauling down a sail or flag in salute. valhalla’s serpent: in 1905, off the brazilian coast, the crew of research ship valhalla reported another of many eel-like sightings. this time, they were supported by two british naturalists, both fellows of the zoological society and equipped with binoculars, whose account is recorded in the 1906 edition of the society’s proceedings. the sighting lasted for several minutes after which edmund meade-waldo reported that the creature was dark seaweed-brown above, and whitish below, with a neck which was... about the thickness of a slight man’s body, and from 7 to 8 feet was out of the water; head and neck were all about the same thickness. the head had a very turtle-like appearance.... it moved its head and neck from side to side in a peculiar manner... the other scientist, michael nicoll, added, “this creature was an example, i consider, of what has been reported, for want of a better name, as the ‘great sea serpent.’” later, three crew members reported seeing the same animal overtaking valhalla at a speed of about nine knots.
