These were lengths of material formerly worn round the shoulder seam of jumpers or frocks to identify each royal navy sailor’s watch. on blue clothing the stripe was red, on white clothing it was blue. the starboard watch wore their stripes on the right shoulder, the port watch on the left. they were abolished about 1895.
