The below-horizon angle of the inclina¬tion of a planar surface determined by trigonometric methods, based on information obtained from a bore¬hole or measurements of the trace of the surface of a core sample. if the borehole intersects the planar surface at any angle less than perpendicular, the apparent dip will always be an angle less than the true dip. compare true dip; also etch angle.
