- The hollow stem of a large bird’s feather, formerly used [1] as a pen, when sharpened to a point. [2] as the firing tube of a ship’s cannon. quill-pusher: formerly, a slang term for the captain’s clerk. also quill-driver. quilting:matting used to protect a vessel from ice damage.
- A sleeve-shaped bushing fitting around and splined or keyed to the drive rod or screw in a drill swivel head. it transmits power received from the drill motor to the drive rod and causes the drive rod to be rotated.
- Sometimes incorrectly used as a name for drive rod and/or drive screw.
- A sleeve or hollow shaft that slides over, or re volves upon, a solid shaft; used in the design of some clutches or in a flexible coupling of the driving shaft and the driven shaft of two machines. r. letter name applied to a nonstandard special and obsolete size of bits, core barrels, and drill rods that were approximately the same size as pk letter-name items.

- Traction motor drive system where the motor drives the wheel through a set of rubber bushed suspension links. the links are fitted to either end of a hollow tube (the quill) surrounding the axle. one set of links is attached to the output drive of the motor, the other to the wheel. the system reduces the unsprung mass on the axle compared with the nose suspended motor.
