A generic term that refers to mathematical space defined by the collection of all possible states of an aspect of a system. for example, a system with four binary input sensors would have 2^4 = 16 states in its input "state space." state-space representation a state-space representation is a method to represent both the current state of a system and the space of possible actions or transitions to new states. they are often represented, respectively, as nodes, and arcs in a graph. the nodes maintain a complete description of the current state of the system and the arcs define possible actions. in a means-ends analysis, the objective is to move the system from an initial state to some defined goal state. see also: means-ends analysis.
