As the name suggests, a counterbalance weight is used to balance an existing weight. often used in oil production pumping units to balance the weight of the upstroke (fluids and the column of the sucker rod) and downstroke (rods) of the pump.

Weight decay, английский
A form of penalized minimization used to reduce overfitting in modeling techniques such as neural networks. rather than attempt to minimize just the error term of the model, the technique attempts to minimize a weighted sum of the errors and the model complexity. weight decay is a specialized form of complexity penalty, usually a sum of the squared weights in the model. this form of penalty tends to shrink the large coefficients in favor of smaller coefficients. the amount of shrinkage depends on the parameter that controls the tradeoff between error minimization and the penalty term. this is sometimes referred to as the decay constant.
