- A kind of strong thread used in sail-making; it is of two kinds: extra, for sewing the seams; and ordinary, for the bolt-ropes. ( see whipping-twine.) irish twine or thumb-line, like nettles, is worked by the fingers from fine yarns drawn from bolt-rope.
- 1. a plied yarn made form medium-twist single yarns with ply twist in the opposite direction. 2. a single-strand yarn, usually 3 or 4 millimeters in diameter, made of hard fibers, such as henequen, sisal, abaca, or phormium, and sufficiently stiff to perform satisfactorily on a mechanical grain binder.
