- An outlier is an observation that is many sd`s from the mean. it is sometimes tempting to discard outliers, but this is imprudent unless the cause of the outlier can be identified, and the outlier is determined to be spurious. otherwise, discarding outliers can cause one to underestimate the true variability of the measurement process.

- Refers to a record or observation that has data value(s) that is(are) outside the normal or expected range for the values. a simple form occurs when a single attribute is "out of range," but other forms can occur when combinations of values are individually valid but jointly unusual. the implication of calling a record an outlier is that the values are correct, but they do not fit the current model for the data. a major task in data cleaning is the identification of unusual attribute values and distinguishing between those that are simply in error and those that are correct but unusual. see also: data cleaning, data mining, data warehousing. out-of-sample testing out-of-sample testing is a general name for split-sample and related technologies for giving "honest" estimates of the errors produced by a induction/learning technique. two samples are drawn from the data. the (usually) larger of the two is designated the "training" set, and the other the "validation`` set. models developed on the training set are then applied to the validation set to estimate the error of the models. see also: bootstrapping, cross-validation, in-sample testing.
