Flatten, английский
  1. In digital graphic creation and manipulation programs, to combine all layers of text, images, and other graphic elements into a single layer. elements cannot be edited after the graphic is flattened, so a graphic is not usually flattened until the final step when all adjustments have been made to the individual layers. flattening an image significantly reduces its file size and allows it to be saved in a wider range of formats. flattening is similar to grouping in that both actions combine a set of objects. however, flattening is a permanent action, whereas a group of objects can be ungrouped.

  2. To convert a nested structure into a flat structure.

Flatten in, to, английский
The action of hauling in the aftmost clue of a sail to give it greater power of turning the vessel; thus, if the mizen or after sails are flatted in, it is to carry the stern to leeward, and the head to windward; and if, on the contrary, the head-sails are flatted in, the intention is to make the ship fall off when, by design or accident, she has come so near as to make the sails shiver; hence flatten in forward is the order to haul in the jib and foretop-mast staysail-sheets towards the middle of the ship, and haul forward
