- A procedure or algorithm to search for something by the incremental exploration an unknown terain according to some criterion. e.g., hill climbing optimisers, chess playing computers which cannot evaluate all possible moves (->satisficing).

- Approximation techniques or "rules of thumb" for solving problems. they are generally used when either the exact solution to a specific problem is unknown or when an exact method is known but would be too difficult or impossible to apply. they offer the tradeoff of a "pretty good" solution at a "reasonable" cost.
