Cant excess

  1. The track cant above that required for the design speed.

  2. For a train traveling slower than the equilibrium speed on a curve, the theoretical dimension by which the outer rail would need to be lowered to reinstate equilibrium

Cant, английский
  1. Log that is squared on two or more sides (24).

  2. A log that has been slabbed on one or more sides

  4. A cut made in a whale between the neck and the fins, to which the cant-purchase is made fast, for turning the animal round in the operation of flensing.

  5. [1]to tilt, tip, or place in an oblique position (e.g., for careening). [2] insincere, pious, or moralistic speech.

  6. The term used to denote the raising of the outer rail on curved track to allow higher speeds than if the two rails were level. cant compensates for the centrifugal force arising from a train traversing a curve. if a track was canted to the level required for the maximum speed of the fastest train, the level of tilt would be too high for a slower train. a compromise degree of cant is therefore used, known as `cant deficiency`.

  7. The dimension by which the outer rail on a curve is raised above the inner rail

Cant bay, английский
A bay erected on a plan of canted outline. cant-bay window a cant window.

Cant beam, английский
A beam having its edges beveled or chamfered.

Cant board, английский
A board which is laid so as to cant a surface, as under the first row of shingles on a roof, or to support lead sheeting on each side of a valley gutter; a cant strip.

Cant brick, английский

Cant deficiency, английский
  1. The difference between equilibrium cant and track cant.

  2. For a train traveling faster than the equilibrium speed on a curve, the theoretical dimension by which the outer rail would need to be raised to reinstate equilibrium

Cant dog, английский
    Short, stubby peavey (19).

Cant equilibrium, английский
The difference in level between the two rails of the track which is required to cause equal forces on each rail at right angles to the plane of the track at the equilibrium speed.

Cant hook, английский
Stout wooden lever used in rolling logs. differs from a peavey in that it has no spike in the end of the stock (24).

Cant molding, английский
A square or rectangular molding with the outside face beveled. cantilever, 2 churches, where persons could wash before entering the church.

Cant rail, английский
Longitudinal vehicle body member which forms the boundary between the bodyside and the roof.

Cant, to, английский
To turn anything about, or so that it does not stand square. to diverge from a central right line. cant the boat or ship; i.e. for careening her.

Cant1 (rail), английский
The angle at which running rails are inclined from vertical to the plane of the track towards the track centre line. rail cant is equal to a slope of 1 in 20 except at crossingwork assemblies.

Cant2 (track), английский
The difference in level between the two rails of the track at right angles to the centreline of the track. this allows for higher speeds than if the two rails were level. cant counteracts for the centrifugal force from a train going over a curve

Cantab, английский
    Cantabrigiensis — кембриджский

Equilibrium, английский
  1. Равновесие

  2. The state of being equally balanced; a state of a body in which the forces acting on it are equally balanced.

  3. A state of balance

  4. Равновесие, равновесное состояние ~ of forces равновесие сил

  5. Literally balance, here balance of forces acting on each other. in a static equilibrium forces compensate each other so that the system is motionless, e.g., a scale at rest. if forces do not compensate each other fully at one instant in time, a system moves until it encounters higher-order constraints, e.g, after starting an engine, it accelerates to a point at which energy supply and work load plus friction are again in balance. in such a dynamic equilibrium, forces complement each other dynamically so that the system`s behavior is repetitive, predictable, does not generate new states and the trajectory follows a regular cycle. e.g., mass production at a well-worked out assembly line, sterotypical conversation within a 28 family, routine administrative procedures. a system may have several distinct equilibria (->polystability). a system in equilibrium conveys no information. one important equilibrium property is stability. homeostasis is a process of interaction favouring an equilibrium.

  6. The stable state of the system. see: attractor.

  7. A state of balance in which there is no tendency for change. see disequilibrium.

Theoretical, английский
