- A large armed merchantman with two or three decks, square-rigged on fore and mainmasts, lateen- sailed on the mizzen, plus a large square-sail on the bowsprit. spanish galleons were heavily armed with (mostly) close-range anti-personnel weapons; english ones carried fewer but longer-range cannon.
