Amphitrite, английский
This greek goddess, who was one of the oceanides, personifies the sea, of which she is queen. she is usually depicted in a seashell chariot drawn by marine animals, and homer calls her “she who beats the billows against the rocks, and has the creatures of the deep in her care.” according to legend, she was abducted by dolphins and carried to poseidon who married her. she is an important figure in the “crossing-the-line” ceremony. amphitrite is not to be confused with aphrodite, who is not a sea-goddess despite the legend of her origin.

Gods of the wind, английский
Winds were as important to sailing seamen as the waves were, and all seafaring cultures had their own wind gods and goddesses. the greeks had five major and many minor ones, most of which were adopted by the romans under different names. here we shall consider only greek mythology, which called the principal wind gods anemoi, each of which was associated with a cardinal direction and specific weather conditions: • aeolus was a son of poseidon, viceroy of the gods, and regent of all the winds, which he kept in vast caves on the mythical island of aeolia. • zephyrus personified, the gentle and friendly west wind, bringer of light spring and early summer breezes. • eurus was the strong, but unlucky, wind that brought warmth and rain from the east. • notus was the warm and moist south or southwest wind, much feared by mariners because he not only brought the fierce storms of late summer and autumn, but his fog, mist, and rain hindered visibility. • boreas blew from the north, bringing cold winter air. he is the only one who seems to have been remembered and invoked by european sailors. godsend:wrecker’s term for a vessel thrown ashore fortuitously rather than deliberately lured onto the rocks.
