Gage, английский

  2. An instrument or device for measuring, indicating or comparing a physical characteristic.

  3. The quantity of water a ship draws, or the depth she is immersed.

Wire, английский
  1. Проводник без разъемов для коммутации на кроссах

  2. String or metal wire above the table with beads or balls for keeping score

  3. A circus apparatus and name of relevant circus genre. the following two types of wire are used in wire-walker`s acts tightly stretched wire and free fastened wire (in the last case the wire tension is weak and it sags under the weight of performer).

  4. Провод, проволока; проволочный

  5. A filament or slender rod of drawn metal.

  6. Проволока

  7. Трапеция; трос стальной

  8. A metal strand or filament. see wire rope. wire rope:wire rope or cable (the names are here interchangeable) refers to a number of metal strands twisted together, each consisting of individual wires laid helically about a central core. this produces metal in its strongest, yet most flexible form. it is unusual to think of rope as a machine, but it is composed of moving parts working in relation to one another. for example, a six-strand rope consisting of forty-nine wires per strand, laid around an independent wire rope core, contains a total of 343 individual wires, each of which must blend with and move relative to the others to give the flexibility necessary for successful operation. various types have been designed to meet a wide range of operating conditions. they are designated by the kind of core (fabric, metal, plastic, etc.); the number of strands; the number, size, and arrangement of the wires in each strand; and the way in which the wires and strands are wound, or laid. most ropes used for nautical duty are fabricated from plow-steel strands laid around a steel core. they must be easy to handle and able to withstand corrosion, but these traits tend to be mutually exclusive. a galvanized finish on individual wires can provide some corrosion protection, but relatively large diameters are needed to prolong resistance. bigger wires usually mean less flexibility, reducing handling ease. to provide the desired combination of handling properties and corrosion resistance for marine service, the fiber content is normally increased. this reduces the strength, but the sacrifice is necessary.

  9. Strong metal fishing line with no stretch. used mostly in deep sea fishing for big game fish like shark or barracuda.

Work hardening, английский
  1. The increased stiffness and brittleness accompanying plastic deformation of metal.

  2. Increase in hardness accompanying plastic deformation of a metal. usually caused in a metal by repeated impacting, bending or flexing. compare creep and recovery.

  3. Increase in hardness accompanying plastic deformation of a metal. usually caused in a metal by repeated impacting, bending, or flexing. see also peening; plastic deformation; strain.

Wicking, английский
  1. The longitudinal flow of a liquid in a wire or cable construction due to capillary action.

  2. The vertical absorption of a liquid into a porous material by capillary forces.

  3. The action of absorption by means of capillary action.

  4. The soft twisted-cotton string used to wick drill-rod joints; the act of placing the cotton string on the rod joints. see wick.

  5. 1. cord, loosely woven or braided tape, or tubing to be cut into wicks. 2. dispersing or spreading of moisture or liquid through a given area, vertically or horizontally; capillary action in material.
