- A device used to identify the kinds of molecules present in a given substance: the molecules are ionized and passed through an electromagnetic field. the way in which they are deflected is indicative of their mass and identity.
- Analytical technique that detects the identity and amount of elements and molecules present in a sample by first ionizing, separating the ions through electromagnetic forces, and then measuring their mass-to-charge ratio. data is presented as a mass spectrum of ion signal as a function of the mass-to-charge ratio. in leak testing, use of a mass spectrometer leak detector specially tuned for helium detection is common. compare spectrometer.
