Exclusive fishing zone. egede’s serpent: hans poulsen egede was a norwegian lutheran missionary who went to greenland in 1721, with the support of the danish government, to set up missions among the inuit. he translated christian texts into the native language and became known as the apostle of greenland. in 1741, he published a full and particular relation of my voyage to greenland, in which he tells of sighting a sea serpent. translations vary, and this is a composite based on various versions of his description: on the 6th of july 1734, when off the south coast of greenland, there appeared to us a very terrible seaanimal, whose head, when raised, was on level with our main-top. its snout was long and sharp, and it blew water almost like a whale. it had broad large paws or flippers and the body was, as it were, covered with a hard scaly skin, very wrinkled rough and uneven. in other respects it was as a serpent; and when it dived, its tail, which was raised in the air, appeared to be a whole ship’s length from its body. a reproduction of egede’s original sketch of the monster now appears in dragons, unicorns, and sea serpents by charles gould (dover, 2002). his depiction of a possible kraken doesn’t quite fit a giant squid or the speculative super-eel (see appendix), but could be either if we allow for the unreliability of eyewitness accounts, especially of things seen for only a few seconds while under considerable stress.
