Venerable mariner’s name for a telescope. originally used to identify ships or read signals, but now more frequently carried as a traditional symbol of office by officers of the day or deck when in port. traditionally a flag officer carries his under the right arm with the eyepiece facing forward; other officers under the left arm with the eyepiece facing aft. the long glass still plays an important role during the formal commissioning of a united states naval vessel. as soon as the commanding officer announces he has assumed command, he directs the executive officer to set the watch. the xo responds “aye-aye sir (or ma’am),” salutes, and turns to the prospective officer of the deck, handing him the long glass symbolic of his office and saying “set the watch, navigator.” after the boatswain’s mates have piped, and duty stations have been manned, the ood makes his first entry in the log and the xo salutes and reports “captain, the watch has been set.” the sponsor of the vessel then orders, “man our ship and bring her to life,” and the crew files aboard to the tune of anchors aweigh.
