Young gentleman, английский
A term formerly used to describe a midshipman. your number’s up: this phrase, which today means “you’ve been caught,” “you’re in trouble,” or even “you’re about to die,” comes from the days of fighting sail. for ease of signaling and identification, every warship was given a unique four-letter “number” which, when hoisted, was said to be “up.” when the flagship flew a number with no other message, it was a peremptory summons for the captain to report immediately to the admiral. this frequently meant a reprimand for some lapse of conduct or dereliction of duty, so word from the officer on watch “captain, your number’s up” was seldom welcomed. yow-yow: a small chinese sampan.

(see also waves.) one of them wrote a short jingle to eulogize the force: i’ve been in frigid greenland and in sunny tennessee, i’ve been in noisy london and in wicked, gay paree, i’ve seen the latin quarter, with its models, wines, and tights, i’ve hobnobbed oft with broadway stars who outshone broadway lights; but north or south or east or west, the girls that i have met could never hold a candle to a newport yeomanette.
