      Процесс, происходящий в наше время, и карстовые формы в этом слу- чае, так или иначе, связаны с поверхностью земли. древний карст происходил в мезозое, палеозое, докембрии. он проявляется в виде древних пустот, не связанных с современным карстом. нередко древний карст заполнен продуктами раз- рушения различных пород. древний карст по отношению к поверхности земли может быть откры- тым или средиземноморским или закрытым - среднеевропейским. по степени активности карст подразделяется на деятельный и неразвивающийся. в районах распространения многолетнемерзлых пород, в связи с их оттаиванием, возможно формирование термокарста.
