  4. Compartments at the bottom of a ship or on the sides which are filled with liquids for stability and to make the ship seaworthy. any shipboard tank or compartment on a tanker normally used for carrying salt water ballast. when these compartments or tanks are not connected with the cargo system they are called segregated ballast tanks or systems.

  5. [1] on surface vessels, a container for liquid ballast, which can be pumped from tank-totank to adjust trim and buoyancy, or be discharged overboard via a pipe, which is usually, but not necessarily, underwater. [2] a submarine uses ballast tanks to submerge and auxiliary trim tanks, to control its buoyancy. when the boat is surfaced, the ballast tanks are filled with air and the submarine’s overall density is less than that of the surrounding water. as the vessel dives, its ballast tanks are flooded with water while, simultaneously, the air is vented, giving it negative buoyancy so that it sinks. a supply of compressed air 33 ballast is maintained on board, for life support as well as to blow water out of the ballast tanks for surfacing.
