- A measure of the reduction in the velocity of light in a medium
- The speed of light in a vacuum divided by the speed of light in a material, abbreviated n, which measures how materials refract light.
- A ratio between the velocity of light in air and that of light through a particular substance. the index of air is 1.00 and indices are referred to the index of air, i.e. the index of water being 1.33 means that the spead of light in air is 1.33 times greater as the speed of light in water.
- Index of refraction
- A measure of the magnitude of slowing of light waves by a particular medium
- (astm d-1218) number indicating the angle through which a ray of light is deflected as it passes through a solid or fluid medium; the number that expresses the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction. typically used for monitoring water-based fluids or solutions.
- Ratio of the speed of the incident wave to that of a refracted wave. it is known as the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first. glossary 19.17

- The ratio between the angle of incidence to the angle of refraction of light. index varies depending on the density of the medium. the denser the medium, the higher the index.
- The speed of light in a vacuum divided by the speed of light in a material, abbreviated n, which measures how materials refract light.
- The degree to which a lens material refracts (bends) light. this results from the ratio of the speed of light in air to the speed of light through a lens substance; the higher the index of lens material, the quicker light rays are bent as they pass through the lens. the higher the index, the more the refractive power of the lens.
