Caisson disease

    A condition in which a person experiences pains in the joints and stomach, and dizziness caused by nitrogen in the blood. also called the bends, compressed air sickness, decompression sickness comment: the disease occurs in a person who has moved rapidly from high atmospheric pressure to a lower pressure area, such as a diver who has come back to the surface too quickly after a deep dive. the first symptoms, pains in the joints, are known as ‘the bends’. the disease can be fatal.
