Mine (naval), английский
An explosive device in a watertight container, floating on, or moored below the surface of the water, or lying on the sea bed. designed to detonate when a hostile vessel strikes it, generates a pressure wave, or exerts acoustic or magnetic influence on it. mines can be deployed [1] offensively, to divert or destroy hostile shipping. [2] strategically, to lock enemy ships in harbor. [3] defensively, to protect friendly ports or routes, or [4] psychologically, to inhibit enemy use of trade routes. the first recorded mention of naval mining was by 14th century chinese artillery officer jiao yu, whose early examples consisted of explosives enclosed in putty-sealed wooden boxes, equipped with time fuses, or rip cords pulled by a concealed ambusher. an american, david bushnell invented the first practical western mine for use against the british during the war of independence. it was a watertight keg filled with gunpowder that was floated toward the enemy and detonated by a percussion lock if it struck a ship. (see also anti-sweep mine, ascending mine, bottom mine, contact mine, limpet mine, magnetic mine, rocket mine, and torpedo mine.) mine clearance & disposal: the processes of detecting and destroying, removing, or neutralizing explosive marine mines.

Minesweeping, английский
The activity of detecting and destroying, removing, or neutralizing explosive marine mines. mines cut loose are either collected for intelligence analysis or destroyed by gunfire. • contact minesweeping: a special cutting wire is dragged though the water, either between two ships or between a ship and a paravane. when it hits the mooring wire of the mine it severs it. • distance minesweeping: a device towed behind the minesweeper emits sounds and magnetism that mimic the signature of a real ship, thereby exploding the mine. • airborne minesweeping: traditionally used towed cutter arrays and sleds equipped for acoustic and magnetic detonation, but flying with a tow is a difficult and highly-skilled activity. • advanced airborne techniques: have no in-water components, contributing to faster sweeps, easing pilot fatigue, and maximizing time on station. they include multiple sonars and electro-optical or laser sensors that scan large areas of ocean quickly, detect floating and moored mines down to at least keel depth, and detonate them with laser-aimed rapidfire cannon.

Bourrelet, английский

  2. A double-knit fabric with raised loops running horizontally across the surface of the cloth giving a rippled or corded effect. bow: the greatest distance, measured parallel to the selvages, between a filling yarn and a straight line drawn between the points at which this yarn meets the selvages. bow may be expressed directly in inches or as a percentage of the width of the fabric at that point.

Bounty mutiny, английский
Thanks to novelists and hollywood, this event is popularly believed to have been a reaction to the cruel behavior of a despotic shipmaster. in fact, lieutenant bligh tended to scold when other captains would have flogged, and to flog when others would have hanged. he only imposed one sentence on the outward journey, writing in the log, “until this afternoon i had hoped i could have performed this voyage without punishment to anyone.” he was uncommonly concerned with the physical health of his men, but he had little empathy for their sensitivities, his temper was ferocious, and his tonguelashings became legendary. the public insults of a captain who had long been his personal friend deeply bootneck 50 affected master’s mate fletcher christian, who was already psychologically disturbed by having to leave his tahitian wife-mistress. he planned to desert but at the last minute instigated mutiny instead. see also bligh.
