(the first, on christmas day, 1914, had been an rnas raid on the german naval base at cuxhaven, launched from three fast cross–channel packets converted into seaplane tenders.) the night raid, of november 11/12, 1940, was one of the most daring episodes of world war ii. a few obsolete, open-cockpit, biplane aircraft attacked the italian fleet in heavily-defended taranto harbor, transforming the balance of naval power in the mediterranean and leading naval pundits around the world to predict the end of the battleship. the tactics employed were carefully studied by the imperial japanese navy (see pearl harbor).
