  9. Any changing of line, form, or even light by photographic materials, such as lenses, films, or filters. though most designers do all they can to eliminate distortion from lenses, most photographers take the "if you can`t beat `em, join `em" approach and exploit it wherever they find it; they use distortion as part of their visual expression.

  5. System of gears capable of dividing the input torque of one shaft between two output shafts where rotation at different speeds is ukely to occur, as in cornering. used as the final drive of vehicles with two or more driven wheels. see also crown wheel

  6. A system of gears that allows the outside driven wheel to rotate faster than the inside driven wheel when turning a corner. conventional “open” differentials direct engine power to the wheel with the least traction, which can be a problem on slippery surfaces. to combat this, some vehicles are equipped with “limited-slip” differentials that ensure some power is always delivered to both driven wheels.

  7. Difference in value between two comparable items

  8. Difference in value between two comparable items change in value of one item compared to another (for example, a “cost-of-living differential” is the difference between the price of goods bought in the home country compared to the price of similar goods in the host country)

Diamonding, английский
The change of a square or rectangular section timber to a diamond shape during drying. diamonding occurs where the growth rings pass through diagonal corners of the section of the piece and is caused by the difference between tangential and radial shrinka

  2. A collateral statement of such facts not inserted on the policy of insurance, as may give the underwriters a just estimate of the risk of the adventure. (see warranty.)

  3. A representation is a set of conventions about how to describe a class of things. representation will generally consist of four parts: 1. a lexicon that determines which symbols are in it vocabulary; 2. a structural part that describes the constraints on the symbols; 3. a collection of methods or procedures that allow the symbols to be manipulated and queried; and 4. a semantics that specifies the meaning of the symbols and their relationships. re-ranking in handwriting and text recognition systems, the task of re-ranking allows the candidate interpretations developed by the recognizer to be ranked or scored according to the language model. see also: word n-gram re-ranking, word-tag model.

  4. If something stands in place of or is chosen to substitute for something else, the former is considered a representation of the latter. e.g., representation of constituencies in government, linguistic representation of an event (->symbol). the 66 belief that all knowledge is a representation of the properties of the real world is as unacceptable as the insistence that all descriptions or messages are about something else.
