Clinking glasses
Морской словарь |
18th century superstition held that a seafarer drowned each time a drinking glass was knocked and “rang.” however, he could be saved if the sound was silenced with a finger and someone simultaneously cried out “save the sailor.” some believed that two soldiers would then be taken instead. this widespread civilian courtesy is still occasionally frowned upon by seamen.
